unit 6/Surface Area and Volume for Cylinders

Summary Of Knowledge

The importance of this unit is that if you have a food company and you want to see the cheepest way of packing food. Or you can find the volume of a cylindrical figure. The goal was to find the volume and the surface area of a cylinder. And to learn how to pack in an effective way.

Key Vocabulary
1. Base: The face of a three dimensional shape chosen to be the "bottom" face.

2. Surface area: the area required to cover a three dimensional shape.

3. Cylinder: A three dimensional shape with two opposite faces that are congruent circles.

4. Volume: The amount of space occupied by or the capacity of a three dimensional shape.

Task Analysis:

Volume: r*r*3.14*h

Suraface Area: r*r*3.14+h*r*3.14*2

Task analysis for volume.

1. Find base of the figure (r*r*3.14)
2. Multiply by the height

Task analysis for surface area

1. Find both, base and top.(r*r*3.14*2)

2. Add by lattaeral surface area to find the cubes that fit in the cylinder

3.Do (r*r*3.14*2+h*r*3.14*2)}

Examples

H: 10

R: 2

V: 125.6

SA: 138.16

v: 2*2*3.14*10=125.6

sa: (2*2*2*3.14+10*2*2*3.14=138.16

H:5

R: 1

V: 15.7

SA: 21.98

V: 1*1*3.14*5= 15.7

SA: (2*1*1*3.14+5*2*1*3.14=21.98
